The Damongo Old District Library, located in the Hangaline electoral area of Damongo, suffered a severe fire incident on Tuesday dawn. In response, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Gonja Municipal Assembly, Hon. Musah Karim Kusubari, visited the site to personally assess the damage.

Accompanied by Mr. Dennis Osei, the deputy coordinating director, the presiding member for the Municipal Assembly, officers from the Ghana Library Board in Damongo, the Assemblyman-elect for the area, Hon. Gorden Kumatey, and a unit committee member, Hon. Musah Kusubari, the team inspected the facility. The fire extensively damaged the library, including its roofing, books, and other valuable assets.

Expressing his dedication to addressing the situation promptly, the MCE assured the community that government intervention would be initiated to find a solution. He also seized the opportunity to caution residents against participating in bushfires, emphasizing the potential societal harm they pose.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the fire originated from a bushfire that spread through a garden, eventually reaching the library’s walls through a fence. This unfortunate incident has left the community dealing with the loss of a crucial cultural and educational resource.

As the community begins the recovery process, the West Gonja Municipal Assembly is expected to collaborate with relevant authorities to expedite the rehabilitation of the Damongo Old District Library. The goal is to mitigate the impact on local residents and restore their access to educational resources.
