Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Minister for Education, has announced a comprehensive plan to improve educational infrastructure and opportunities in the Savannah Region. Speaking at the 49th Gonjaland Youth Association Congress in Sawla, he laid out several key initiatives aimed at transforming the region’s education landscape.
Among the major commitments, he pledged to equip Larbanga Islamic Senior High School with modern resources and boarding facilities. He also announced the construction of an ultra-modern, multi-purpose STEM center in Tinga, located in the Bole Municipality.
In a significant move to support teacher education, Hon. Iddrisu revealed that the Savannah College of Education will be fully absorbed by the government—this includes staff salaries, an initiative facilitated by Professor Ahmed Jinapor. Additionally, the college will receive a new pickup vehicle to aid its operations.
Looking further ahead, the Minister announced plans to establish a new university in the region, signaling the government’s long-term investment in higher education for Gonjaland. He also reaffirmed the commitment to completing all ongoing Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) projects across the region.
Underscoring the importance of cultural preservation, Hon. Iddrisu appealed to the leadership of the Gonjaland Youth Association to promote local languages and dialects in early education, ensuring the younger generation remains connected to their roots.
Expressing deep gratitude to the President for the opportunity to lead the education sector, Hon. Iddrisu promised to deliver on all promises made. Given the region’s significance as the birthplace of former President John Dramani Mahama, he assured that developmental efforts would be prioritized and accelerated.
The 49th Gonjaland Youth Congress drew notable figures and government officials from across Ghana, reinforcing the event’s status as a vital platform for youth engagement, unity, and regional development. The educational initiatives unveiled reflect a strong commitment to empowering the youth, advancing education, and preserving cultural heritage in the Savannah Region.
