The 67th Independence Anniversary of Ghana was celebrated in the Savannah region at the sports oval of Damongo SHS in the West Gonja Municipality, emphasizing the importance of sustainable peace and unity. Attendees included Chiefs, Queen Mothers, youth groups, women groups, security agencies, Honorable Assembly Members, clergy, heads of departments, school children, teachers, cultural troops, and others.
During the event, Muhazu Saeed Jibril, the Savannah Regional Minister, stressed the need for collective effort to maintain the region’s peace. He urged the people to prioritize the common good over individual interests, especially in the lead-up to and aftermath of the 2024 elections. The theme for the celebration was ‘Our Democracy Our Pride,’ emphasizing the significance of cherishing and safeguarding Ghana’s democratic values.
Pointing to Goal 16 of the Sustainable Development Goals, which advocates for peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice, and accountable institutions, the Minister highlighted Ghana’s reputation as a beacon of peace in the sub-region. He emphasized that the upcoming elections shouldn’t overshadow Ghana’s achievements in maintaining peace and stability.
Encouraging tolerance and unity, the Minister urged citizens to view political opponents as partners in progress rather than enemies. He emphasized the importance of prioritizing national interests over personal agendas for the greater good of Ghana’s democracy and development.
Reflecting on Ghana’s 32 years of uninterrupted multi-party democracy, the Minister commended the nation’s progress in upholding democratic principles. He acknowledged the sacrifices of past generations and called for a renewed commitment to maintaining Ghana’s democratic values.
The Minister also praised President Akufo Addo’s recognition of Ghana’s commitment to democracy in his recent State of the Nation address. He highlighted the positive impact of democracy on the Savannah region, including improved infrastructure, education, healthcare, and empowerment of youth and women since its creation five years ago.
