The West Gonja Municipal Chief executive, Hon. Musah Karim Kusubari has on Monday, 7th November, 2022 met with transport operators in the West Gonja Municipality to address recent fare hikes in the area.
The meeting with them according to the MCE, was for them to negotiate on conditions that will best benefit the very people who patronize their transport services particularly fares to the various destinations in the area.
The MCE explained that, as partners, he understands what they are currently going through as transport operators following recent crude oil hikes but pleaded with them to bear with the situation and consider the plight of the people in adjusting their fares.
Speaking on behalf of the GPRTU and the other transport Associations in the municipality, Mr. Abubakari Musah explained that, the recent increment of fares in the area is as a result of the continuous hikes in fuel prices which he said has taken a toll on their businesses, hence the need for the upward adjustment in the fares.
He added that, apart from the fuel hikes, the fare increment is also compelled following unsteady prices of some variables including spare parts and lubricants that had shot up recently thereby affecting their operations.
The MCE together with officials from the Assembly and the stakeholders present negotiated with the transport operators to reconsider their decision to increase transport fares especially that of Tamale which the owners are considering to adjust from the current Ghc 40.00 to Ghc45.00 or Ghc 50.00.
Meanwhile Petrol is currently selling at 16.80 per litre and diesel 21.40 per litre at Dukes filling station and at Zen filling Station, petrol is selling at 16.99 per litre and Diesel 21.55 per litre with Nasona filling Station turning off their price board.
Though Members of the Associations assured the MCE of heeding to his call but it is however unclear if the MCEs plea will be adhered to as they promised to get back to him in due course after meeting with leaders of the transport Associations in the municipality.
The meeting was attended by some executives of the GPRTU, drivers from the two transport Associations, officials from the Assemblies, the youth chief, the presiding member of the Assembly and a representative from the Damongo youth parliament.
