The West Gonja Municipal Assembly has led a significant refuse-clearing exercise at two critical sites—Galamsey Station and 7.7 Junction—in the Hangaline electoral area. The operation, conducted on Tuesday, June 10, 2025, was in direct response to mounting complaints from residents over worsening sanitation conditions and the associated health risks posed by long-standing refuse heaps.

Speaking in an interview, the Assembly Member for the area, Hon. Kumatey Gorden, revealed that the initiative was launched following persistent appeals from the community and extensive consultations with key stakeholders. These included officials from Zoomlion Ghana Ltd, the Damongo Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant Ltd, and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for West Gonja, Hon. Yakubu Yussif Castro.
“The refuse dumps had become not just unsightly but a serious health hazard,” Hon. Kumatey stated. “This collaborative effort marks a vital step toward protecting the well-being of our people.”

He emphasized that the clean-up was a joint initiative involving the Municipal Assembly, Zoomlion, the Damongo Integrated Recycling and Compost Plant, and the Assembly Member’s office. Beyond the removal of waste, the campaign also included a community sensitization component, aimed at promoting proper waste disposal practices to prevent future accumulation.

Hon. Kumatey extended his appreciation to the MCE and the Municipal Assembly for their prompt intervention and to the local media for giving voice to residents’ concerns. He also commended Municipal Environmental Health Officer Mr. Zakaria Budali, along with the dedicated teams from Zoomlion and the Recycling Plant, for their tireless efforts throughout the day.
The successful exercise underscores the critical role of community involvement and inter-agency collaboration in addressing environmental sanitation issues and enhancing public health in the municipality.
