Following politically charged clashes during the final funeral rites of the late Queen Mother of Busunu, Member of Parliament for Damongo and Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Lawyer Samuel Abu Jinapor, has initiated efforts to reconcile and offer condolences to the family of the deceased Queen Mother.
A delegation, led by the Municipal Chief Executive for the West Gonja Municipal Assembly, Honorable Musah Karimu Kusubari, accompanied by the Damongo Constituency NPP chairman and other constituency executives, was dispatched to Busunu to convey apologies and sympathy to the mourning family.
During the visit, Honorable Musah Kusubari expressed MP Jinapor’s deep regret over the regrettable events that marred the funeral proceedings. He reiterated the MP’s respect and esteem for the late Queen Mother (Busunuwurche) and the entire family, highlighting their non-partisan stance by refraining from wearing party colors at the funeral grounds.
The Municipal Chief Executive deplored the disturbance caused by certain individuals who turned the solemn occasion into a political arena, leading to unrest and violence. He also mentioned that some family members of the late Queen Mother had visited his office to express gratitude to both himself and the Damongo Lawmaker, Abu Jinapor, for their contributions to the funeral rites.
The funeral, originally intended as a moment of mourning and commemoration, descended into chaos as tensions between supporters of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) escalated. Matters escalated when NDC supporters reportedly attempted to block the entry of NPP representatives, resulting in clashes and injuries among attendees.
In response to the violence, Honorable Abu Jinapor, along with other prominent figures including Chief of Staff, Honorable Frema Opare, and former President Mahama, condemned the acts and called for peace and restraint among party supporters.
The incident has raised concerns about the politicization of such events, with many fearing further unrest, particularly with the approach of the 2024 election year. Calls have been made for swift and decisive action to ease tensions and ensure the peaceful coexistence of supporters from both parties in future gatherings.
