Mole National Park, in collaboration with A Rocha Ghana and the University for Development Studies (UDS) Nyankpala Campus, celebrated the “International Day for Biological Diversity” with a series of lectures and presentations focused on biodiversity conservation. The event was held at the Jebote Conference Hall in Mole National Park. Observed annually on May 22nd, the International Day for Biological Diversity commemorates the adoption of the Convention on Biological Diversity and the Earth Summit in 1992. This day serves as a crucial reminder of the rich tapestry of life on Earth and the pressing need to protect it. The theme for World Biodiversity Day 2024, “Be Part of the Plan,” calls for collective action to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as the Biodiversity Plan. In his welcome address, Mr. Bona Kyire, Assistant Park Manager for Mole National Park, emphasized the significance of biodiversity, highlighting the diverse life forms, from the smallest organisms to the largest animals like elephants, found in the park. He stressed that biodiversity is essential for sustaining human life and shaping the environment. He also noted that World Biodiversity Day provides a unique opportunity to support the Convention on Biological Diversity and its protocols, urging everyone to play their part in conservation efforts. Mr. Kyire called on the lecturers and students of UDS Nyankpala Campus present at the event to intensify education and awareness, support conservation efforts, adopt sustainable practices, advocate for policy changes, and reconnect with nature to conserve biodiversity. Dr. Timothy Khan Aikins, a lecturer at the Department of Biodiversity Conservation and Management at UDS Nyankpala Campus, explained that the UN proclaimed May 22nd as International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) to enhance understanding and awareness of biodiversity issues. He recounted that in December 2000, the UN General Assembly designated May 22nd as IDB to commemorate the adoption of the Convention’s text on May 22nd, 1992. Dr. Aikins highlighted that the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, adopted after a four-year consultation and negotiation process, aims to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and builds on the Convention’s previous plans. The framework envisions a world living in harmony with nature by 2050, focusing on maintaining ecosystem integrity, genetic diversity, ecosystem services, and equitable benefits from genetic resources. Isaac Ntori of A Rocha Ghana, in his presentation, discussed A Rocha Ghana’s vision of “together caring for God’s creation always” and its mission to manage Earth’s resources through sustainable and innovative actions. He outlined their thematic areas of work, including collaborative natural resource governance, species and ecosystem conservation, green economy development, climate change mitigation, and conservation education. Mr. Ntori identified bush burning, unsustainable charcoal burning, logging, and pastoralist activities as key challenges in their efforts to conserve biodiversity.
