In a major boost to healthcare delivery, St. Anne Catholic Hospital in Damongo received a donation of state-of-the-art medical equipment valued at €30,000 (approximately 500,000 Ghana Cedis) on March 12, 2025. The donation, facilitated by the Circle Association for International Cooperation—a philanthropic organization based in Bolzano, Italy—was made possible through the joint efforts of the Diocesan Health Directorate and the Diocesan Development Office.

The newly acquired medical equipment will enhance both laboratory diagnostics and surgical procedures at the hospital. The donated items include a hot air oven, incubator, electrophoresis machine, and Bunsen burner for the laboratory, as well as an anaesthetic machine, theatre bed, and standing lamp for the operating theatre. These resources are expected to significantly improve patient care, particularly in diagnosing infections and conducting surgical interventions.

Dr. Nelson Agboadoh, Medical Director of the hospital, expressed his deep appreciation for the donation, emphasizing its transformative impact. “This equipment is crucial for improving surgical and diagnostic services at the hospital. For instance, the laboratory tools will enable us to conduct sensitivity tests, allowing us to identify specific bacteria responsible for infections and prescribe targeted antibiotics. This shifts us from empirical treatment to evidence-based care,” he explained.

Prior to this donation, the hospital faced significant challenges, including outdated equipment and limited surgical capacity. Dr. Agboadoh noted that the new theatre bed and anaesthetic machine would enhance patient comfort and safety during surgeries, while the laboratory equipment would ensure more precise and timely diagnoses.

Despite this positive development, Dr. Agboadoh called for additional support to address other pressing needs, including modern surgical instruments and a maternity complex. “While we are immensely grateful for this donation, our work is far from over. We appeal to philanthropic individuals and organizations to help us further transform St. Anne Hospital into a centre of excellence,” he added.

Very Rev. Fr. Sylvester Kuubetersuur, Development Coordinator for the Diocese, officially handed over the equipment to the hospital, reaffirming the diocese’s commitment to supporting healthcare improvements. “This is just the first tranche of donations. We expect an additional €30,000 worth of equipment soon. Our donors have been incredibly generous, and we urge hospital staff to use these resources responsibly to benefit the community for years to come,” he stated.

The Circle Association for International Cooperation has played a crucial role in this initiative, with the total value of donated equipment expected to exceed €60,000 once the second batch arrives.

This donation marks a significant milestone for St. Anne Catholic Hospital, promising improved healthcare services for the people of Damongo and surrounding communities. The hospital administration and staff have pledged to make the most of the new equipment, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based medical care.
